NoChintz were recently appointed by SMG to design a new backstage bar at the Manchester Arena. We named the bar “Plus One”, designed an identity and were responsible for all of the interior design and branding consultancy for the space.
The bar facility is a 250m2 space with associated toilet facilities, seating 88 covers with additional space for 40 people standing.
We took inspiration from various musical and stage references throughout the space; through studio style lighting and bespoke microphone installations.
The entrance to the bar is adorned in the orange branding colour, which spills on to the floor in a spotlight arrangement, this and custom painted graphics to the walls and doors mark the main access into the space. Song lyrics from prominent Manchester bands were hand illustrated and scanned before being applied directly to internal entrance walls.
Inside the bar area a large mesh panel installation was applied to the walls behind the bespoke designed fixed seating, which plays on the idea of sound level controls on an amplifier. The rest of the wall space was kept simple using concrete effect finishes and muted colours to set off the bright orange “Plus One” branding through the space.
Furniture used has also been inspired by the stage setting, using drum stools and upholstered flight cases as seating though the space. We drew bespoke graphics based on scientific vibration patterns that were printed directly to the tabletops.
We chose a commercial flooring laid in a large scale herringbone pattern throughout the space and concrete effect tiling to the toilet areas.
The space has already been used for Kasabian’s official after-show party and The Who’s pre-show event.
