This time last year Lucy and Natalie headed over to Berlin with 100 other hotel innovators for a 24 hour ‘Sleepover’; a new style of networking event for the hotel industry organised by Sleeper Magazine. The event was so great that the pair jumped at the opportunity to be part of this year’s get-together in Amsterdam. No formal networking or meetings, the event instead focuses on real ‘social’ networking and developing long-term relationships in the industry.
This year’s base was citizenM Amsterdam City. Marketed as ‘a new breed of hotel’ for the ‘mobile citizens of the world’ the venue did not disappoint. Delegates gathered for their welcome lunch and itineraries before setting off on their chosen adventures.
For us it was the Bar and Restaurant tour by Tram, hosted by Venuez Magazine, giving the opportunity to view behind the scenes of some of the cities coolest venues.
Returning to base for a discussion on the concept and design of the CitizenM model – by the team behind it – started the evening’s activities off. Cocktails at the Doubletree by Hilton Sky Lounge followed, and then a boat trip to a secret location for dinner. The night ended with a Red Light Regeneration tour, hosted by Rob Wagemans from Concrete Architectural Associates, and drinks at Hyatt’ boutique hotel Andez.
The following morning there was an exclusive, pre-opening construction tour of the new Waldorf Astoria as well as tours of the Andaz and the Conservatorium design hotels.
The 24 hours ended in the Moooi showroom with a talk on ‘Amsterdam – Creative Capital’ by one of NoChintz’s favourite designers Marcel Wanders. He highlighted the creativity and the innovation in the Dutch capital over the past 700 years.
