Formally a more traditional pub known amongst locals as ‘Vietnam’, the dark interior space of orange walls and red carpets has been fully reformed as a calm new sophisticated bar in one of the rapidly growing areas of the city.
As well as the full re-design of the space NoChintz were commissioned to design a new 9 meter bar gantry to incorporate a dry and wets sales area. We incorporated as much of the existing structure of the front bar as possible, painting it out and adding a new top. Details such as handmade brass rails, an art deco style tiled floor surround, and brass hooks were added. A blackboard display area was incorporated to one end and a green decorative ladder leading to the gantry lifted the bar and gave the space a clear focal point.
The furniture is an eclectic mix of new finds and refurbished existing pieces, combining a dedicated dining area along with more relaxed spaces. Features including shoe lasts which house the table numbers in seed trays, industrial drawers filled with herbs and crate style display areas to house our array of curiosities can be seen throughout the space. Our real coup was the on-site invention of a coat hook using reclaimed brass taps from the old bar top!
We chose a muted palette of greys and greens with warmer tones brought in through artwork, fresh flowers and vintage re-sprayed Chesterfields and suitcases.
The design of the toilets continues the eclectic style using different coloured front doors, with door knockers and Victorian signage. We designed bespoke sink units that were adorned with some of our vintage finds. The male toilet evokes a vintage barber style with a curiosity cabinet, and shaving mirrors with changeable moustaches and beards!
The overall effect is a vintage, Parisian bar space with eccentric detailing creating a balance between old and new.
